Scriptures:  Isaiah 43:1-7, Acts 8:14-17Luke 3:15-17, 21-22

Background:   Theological interpretations vary widely, but baptism is one of two rituals practiced by all churches in some way, because of Jesus’ example and command.  While an emphasis on God’s activity in baptism can reduce the sacrament to little more than superstition (need to get the baby “christened” before something bad happens), the opposite extreme can present a “believer’s baptism” that is all about personal decision and leaves out grace.  The scripture today reminds us that baptism is about both–our participation and the Holy Spirit’s presence.

Think and talk:  What is your baptism story?  Do you remember your baptism?  If you were baptized as a child, what were your parents’ reasons?  If you chose to be baptized, why? What role does being baptized play in your self-understanding?

Looking around:  The story of Jesus’ baptism points to the crucial role of the Holy Spirit’s presence in Jesus’ identity and ours. When Christians describe the Spirit, they might point to meaningful coincidences, opportunities, feelings of inspiration or insights.  Our baptismal service describes the presence of the Spirit in this way, “an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, and the the gift of joy and wonder in all [God’s] works.”  How is the Holy Spirit present and real in your life?
